Black Breastfeeding Week

Yes you read that right! Its International Black Breastfeeding week and the theme is: Imagine! Innovate! Liberate!

We want to focus on the difficulties that black women face in trying to breastfeed. 'The voices of black families have been traditionally overlooked in innovation spaces and that’s why we need YOU to bring your fire, passion, and brilliant ideas to revolutionize Black breastfeeding in the United States.'

Why do we need a Black Breastfeeding week?

Overall health outcomes and care are not the same between black and white infants. Black infants mortality rates are twice as high, and rates for upper respiratory infections, Type II diabetes, asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and childhood obesity--- all preventable with breastfeeding.

There isn't enough lactation leadership in the black community--- hence this special week! Lactation counseling is usually led by white individuals. Belief it or not, background does indeed make difference when getting help and receiving culturally competent care. If women do not feel understood they may not continue breastfeeding...

Breastfeeding is important in all backgrounds and ethnicities --- reasons why we are so excited to celebrate this week!

Until next time!
